Gram Bharti popularized the use of Krishak Bandhu treadle pumps among the poor farmers. Diesel and petrol being darer, the poor farmers cannot afford to have access to diesel pumps and tractors for cultivation. They also can’t afford to pay for the power-driven deep tube well irrigation. Gram Bharti developed the small farming concept among the poor farmers on which they could cultivate vegetable through the use of treadle pumps. Krishak Bandhu treadle pumps do not involve the consumption of Kerosene, petrol or diesel. It is farmer-friendly and environment friendly. It is a low-cost technology and does not involve a big investment or bank loans to install. It provides timely irrigation in the field and ensures optimum use of groundwater resources. Lastly, it is very easy to install, operate, maintain and use. A very small training is required for the installation and maintenance of the treadle pumps. It consumes very less human energy and even a small child can operate it.
The introduction of low cost treadle pump technology among the poor farmers could save non-renewable energy, improved income of the farmers through the sale of vegetable, ensured household food and nutrition security and saved the farmers from working in unorganized sectors. Apart from saving energy, the multiple benefits of the treadle pumps drew the attention of the agricultural department, Panchayati raj institutions and the block administration.
